Heritage Property Cleaning: Valletta & Three Cities Guide

CleanerPlace Malta·2026-03-18·7 min read

Why Heritage Properties Need Special Care

Valletta and the Three Cities are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The properties here are not standard apartments — they have limestone floors that stain easily, wooden galleriji (enclosed balconies) that need gentle cleaning, and plumbing that dates back decades. Using the wrong products or techniques can cause permanent damage.

If you rent a heritage property on Airbnb, your cleaner needs to know what they are dealing with.

Limestone Floors

Most Valletta and Three Cities properties have traditional Maltese limestone tile floors. These are beautiful but porous.

  • Never use acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon-based products, limescale removers). Acid etches limestone permanently
  • Use pH-neutral floor cleaner diluted in warm water. Mop with a well-wrung mop — excess water soaks into the stone
  • Blot spills immediately. Red wine, coffee, and olive oil stain limestone within minutes
  • Seal annually. A penetrating stone sealer protects against stains without changing the appearance
  • No steam mops. The heat and moisture can crack old limestone tiles

Wooden Galleriji and Shutters

The enclosed wooden balconies (galleriji) are iconic to Valletta. They require careful maintenance:

  • Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. No wet cleaning — water damages untreated wood
  • Check for peeling paint. Report any deterioration to the property manager. Heritage regulations require specific paint types and colours
  • Clean glass panels gently. Old glass is thinner and more fragile than modern panes. Use a soft cloth, not a squeegee
  • Shutters: Wipe louvres with a damp cloth. Check hinges work — guests struggle with stiff shutters and force them, causing damage

Old Plumbing and Bathrooms

  • Low water pressure is normal. Do not report it as a fault unless it has changed suddenly
  • Check for leaks under sinks. Old pipe joints weep when temperatures change. Report any new moisture
  • Limescale on vintage fixtures: Use a gentle cream cleanser, not spray limescale remover. Aggressive chemicals pit brass and chrome finishes on period taps
  • Drainage: Older buildings have narrower waste pipes. Clear shower drains after every turnover to prevent blockages

Access and Logistics

Heritage properties present unique access challenges:

  • Narrow streets: Many Valletta streets are pedestrian-only. Your cleaning team carries equipment on foot
  • Steep stairs: Lifts are rare in heritage buildings. Factor this into turnover time — a 4th-floor walk-up takes longer
  • Key access: Some heritage buildings have original heavy wooden doors with traditional keys. Make sure your cleaner knows the lock type

Our Valletta cleaning teams and Three Cities specialists are trained on heritage properties. They carry the right products and know the buildings.
