Farmhouse Cleaning Guide: Gozo & Malta Villa Turnovers

A farmhouse turnover is not the same as an apartment clean. You are dealing with 200-400m² of space, multiple bathrooms, a full outdoor area with pool, BBQ, and often a garden. A single cleaner cannot handle this in a standard 2-hour window.

Farmhouses in Gozo are particularly demanding because of their size, stone construction, and remote locations. Getting the logistics right is essential.

• 2-bedroom farmhouse: 2 cleaners, 2.5-3 hours
• 3-bedroom farmhouse: 3 cleaners, 3-4 hours
• 4+ bedroom villa: 4 cleaners, 4-5 hours

Always send a team, never a single cleaner. Farmhouses have too many zones (indoor, outdoor, pool) for one person to finish in time for a 3pm check-in.

• Skim surface for leaves and debris before every check-in
• Check water clarity. Cloudy water needs a shock treatment — allow 24 hours before swimming
• Wipe pool surround. Stone coping collects dust, sand, and sunscreen residue
• Sun loungers and cushions: Wipe down all furniture. Store cushions indoors if rain is forecast
• Pool toys/floats: Rinse and inflate replacements if needed
• Safety check: Ensure pool fence gate latches properly if child-safety fencing is installed

• Clean grill grates after every guest stay. Baked-on grease is the most common complaint
• Empty ash tray on charcoal BBQs. Check gas bottle level on gas BBQs
• Outdoor sink: Clear drain, wipe basin, check soap dispenser
• Dining area: Wipe table and chairs. Check for candle wax on surfaces
• Outdoor lights: Test all lights work. Guests use outdoor spaces extensively in the evening

Farmhouse kitchens are typically twice the size of apartment kitchens with more appliances:

• Double ovens: Check both ovens are clean inside. Guests use them for large group meals
• Dishwasher: Run a rinse cycle. Add a fresh tablet
• Pantry/store room: Check for left-behind food. Wipe shelves
• Large fridge: Empty completely, wipe all shelves, check ice maker works
• Cooking oil and spices: Many farmhouses stock basics. Check levels and replace as needed

• Ferry schedule: If your team travels from Malta, plan around the Gozo Channel ferry. A missed ferry costs 45 minutes minimum
